* WHAT…Flooding caused by excessive rainfall is expected.
* WHERE…A portion of northwest Spartanburg County, South Carolina
* WHEN…Until 430 PM EST Wednesday.
* IMPACTS…Nuisance flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to streams
and other poor-drainage areas, including farmland, parks,
greenways, boat-access areas, golf courses, underpasses, and
parking lots. Isolated, shallow flows over roadways is possible.
A few flood-prone, low-water crossings may become impassible.
* ADDITIONAL DETAILS…
– At 438 AM EST, Between 2.5 and 3.5 inches of rain have fallen
over the past 24 hours across the South Pacolet River
watershed from Gowensville to Campobello. This has resulted
in a lengthy period of excessive runoff and flows into the
South Pacolet River and associated tributaries, including
Motlow and Holston creeks. The South Pacolet River is
currently above Action/Advisory Stage, resulting in nuisance
flooding of adjacent low-lying areas. High flows are likely
causing flooding of Old Mill Rd due to backwater effects
along Motlow Creek.
The following streamgauge is above Action/Advisory Stage,
resulting in nuisance flooding along the South Pacolet
River…
ID: CAMS1
NAME: at Alverson Rd near Campobello
CURRENT STAGE: 8.43 feet
ACTION/ADVISORY STAGE: 8.00 feet
MINOR FLOOD STAGE: 10.00 feet
CREST: Not Occurred
TREND: Rising Slowly
ESTIMATED FORECAST: The South Pacolet River will continue
slowly rising to a crest between 8.5 to 8.7 feet later this
morning. The river will begin a gradual recession into the
early afternoon and will fall back below Action/Advisory
Stage later today.
IMPACTS: At 8.0 feet, Action/Advisory Stage. Common, nuisance
flooding of low-lying areas adjacent to the S Pacolet River
is beginning. Old Mill Rd is beginning to flood due to high
flow and backwater effects from the adjacent tributary Motlow
Creek.
– Doppler radar and automated gauges indicate light rain has
persisted overnight. Light rainfall is expected to continue
through sunrise. Additional rainfall amounts of 0.5 to 1.0
inches are expected over the area. This additional rainfall
is not expected to significantly exacerbate flood conditions;
however, it will prolong excessive runoff and delay the crest
and recession of the South Pacolet River.
– Some locations that may experience nuisance flooding
include…
Campobello and Gowensville.
